Houston Contemporary Workshop
June 15th-21st, 2026 (15+)
The Institute of Contemporary Dance Houston presents the Houston Contemporary Dance Company in a six day workshop geared toward the pre-professional and professional level dancers (Ages 15+) that are interested in a full choreographic experience while learning more about Houston Contemporary Dance Company. This workshop will consist of one technique class a day, Rep class and then the afternoon working on creating a new choreographic work from our 2 Guest Artists, Christian Denice and Take Ueyama Attendees conclude in a special performance on Sunday, June 21st, 2026 at the Institute of Contemporary Dance. There are no classes on June 19th, 2026 in observance of Juneteeth. Acceptance into the workshop is by audition only with limited in studio spots. If you cannot audition in person or virtually, please submit a video audition here.

Christian Denice is a dancer and choreographer originally from Los Angeles, California. His professional dance experience includes Odyssey Dance Theatre, River North Dance Chicago, and BJM Danse (Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal). As an artist, Christian seeks to examine and unravel the mysteries of the human experience by way of dance and dance making. As a choreographer, he has created new works for such companies and organizations as Nevada Ballet Theatre, Moving Arts with dancers of Kansas City Ballet and Cincinnati Ballet, Chamber Dance Project, Odyssey Dance Theatre, DanceWorks Chicago, Interlochen Center for the Arts, the Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company, Missouri Contemporary Ballet, Western Michigan University, Modern America Dance Company, Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company, Eisenhower Dance Detroit, Houston Contemporary Dance Company, Wright State University, Kit Modus, Dance Lab New York, Santa Barbara City College, Manhattanville College, and Dreyfoos School for the Arts. As a dance educator, Christian brings his movement language both nationally and internationally, and has been on faculty with Modas Dance, Open Doors Dance Festival, EPIC Dance Utah, Eisenhower Dance Detroit NEWdanceFEST, Kansas City Jazz Dance Fest, DanceWorks Chicago Dance360, AXIS Connect Los Angeles, Peridance Center in New York City, and SALT Dance Link Festival. Christian was the 2015 winner of the University of South Florida's Echo Choreographic Competition and selected as one of the three choreographers for the Joffrey Academy's Winning Works Choreographic competition in 2016. Christian works for Greek choreographer Andonis Foniadakis, restaging his work for companies throughout the United States and Europe, as well as dancing in his production of “Salema Revisited” which premiered in Athens, Greece in 2021. Christian worked with New York City based filmmaker Alexander Sargent on a dance film of his work “Dwellings” created on Chamber Dance Project which premiered at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in October 2022. Christian served as Artist in Residence at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland from 2021-2023. Christian made his Broadway debut in “The Little Prince '' which opened in New York in 2021 and most recently served as répétiteur and rehearsal director for Texas based contemporary company ISHIDA Dance.
A native of Tokyo, Take Ueyama moved to the United States in 1991 to study dance at The Juilliard School in New York City. Upon graduation, he was invited to join the Paul Taylor Dance Company, touring internationally for eight years. He also performed extensively with Kazuko Hirabayashi Dance Theatre. In 2003, Take made his choreographic debut with Tsubasa, presented at SUNY New Paltz with fellow Taylor dancers. Two years later, he founded TAKE Dance, a company known for its powerful athleticism and evocative blend of Eastern and Western aesthetics. Drawing on his Japanese heritage and a deep reverence for nature and humanity, Take's work explores themes of beauty, resilience, compassion, and the duality of light and darkness in the human experience. His choreography has been presented by major institutions and festivals including The Kennedy Center, The Joyce Theater, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Central Park SummerStage, PS/21 Chatham, The Judson Memorial Church, Winspear Opera House, Harris Theater Cicago, Spring to Dance Festival in St. Louis, Perry-Mansfield and Washington DC’s National Cherry Blossom Festival, among others. His work has been commissioned and performed by companies and schools such as Newport Contemporary Ballet, BalletX, Columbia Ballet Collaborative, Pegasus Contemporary Ballet, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, ArcDanz, The Juilliard School, The Ailey School, and SMU Meadows School of the Arts. Take has received international recognition for his choreography. Sakura Sakura was a prizewinner at the International Modern Dance Choreographic Competition in Burgos, Spain. He was one of four choreographers selected for the 2006 “Free to Rep” program at Florida State University’s MANCC and became the first choreographer to receive the S&R Foundation’s Washington Award in 2010. Other honors include the 2015 Jadin Wong Award for Emerging Asian American Choreographer (Asian American Arts Alliance), a 2022 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship, the 2023 Danse Mirage Foundation Choreography Grant for Bamboo Dreams, and the 2025 Gross Family Prize from the Charles and Joan Gross Family Foundation.

ICD Contemporary Intensive (June 22-26th, 2026)- NEW! Introducing our brand new Contemporary Intensive! This five day intensive will allow you to dive deep into your contemporary style and technique. Getting to work with one amazing guest instructor alongside the ICD staff and local Houston instructors. In addition to daily contemporary classes, the week will also include classes in ballet, contemporary, contemporary ballet, contemporary partnering, hip hop, ballroom and more. Friday will conclude in an informal open showing of what you have learned all week!
ICD Classical Intensive (July 6-10th, 2026) - NEW! Introducing our brand new Classical Intensive! This five day intensive will expose you to classical techniques in ballet, modern and jazz! This intensive will be jam packed with ICD staff and local Houston Instructors. Friday will conclude in an informal open showing of what you have learned all week!
ICD Performance Intensive (July 13-17th, 2026)- NEW! Introducing our brand new Performance Intensive! This five day intensive will focus on your performance in many styles! You will get to learn from one guest instructor and many ICD Staff and local Houston instructors. The week will include classes focusing on performance such as Commercial Jazz, Heels, Dance Theatre, Musical Theatre, Acting, Pantomime and more! Friday will conclude in an informal open showing of what you have learned all week!
ICD Contemporary Intensive (July 20-24th, 2026)- NEW! Introducing our brand new Contemporary Intensive! This five day intensive will allow you to dive deep into your contemporary style and technique. Getting to work with one amazing guest instructor alongside the ICD staff and local Houston instructors. In addition to daily contemporary classes, the week will also include classes in ballet, contemporary, contemporary ballet, contemporary partnering, hip hop, ballroom and more. Friday will conclude in an informal open showing of what you have learned all week!
